 Abstract:  This collection is comprised of personal and professional photographs of Julian D. Hayden. Much of this material relates to his work as an archaeologist, including excavations of Snaketown, Ventana Cave, Pueblo Grande and other excavations. Other photos include Pima Indian ethnographic material, 19th century Arizona ruins and Spanish missions in Arizona and Mexico. Personal photographs include images of Irwin Hayden (Julian D. Hayden’s father,) Emil Haury and other contemporaries of Hayden. There are also some photographs of Julian Hayden’s jewelry work. All images are available in negative format or contact sheets.

Formats include postcards, stereographs, cartes-de-visite, cabinet cards, cyanotypes, view books, photograph albums, panoramas, photoprints, and others.

The bulk of the material relates to his dual careers as a professor of art education at the University of Arizona and as an artist but it also includes family photographs and photographs from his travels. The collection consists primarily of slides but also included are print photographs, negatives, 8 mm films, printed notes and class handouts, and articles. It also contains several large photographs, some mounted, and an original photo montage, “Travel on Gravel with Ethyl”.
